Summary

Chronic widespread and diffuse aching at many sites, and multiple tender points at characteristic locations lead to a wide differential diagnosis: psychiatric disturbances, mild and early forms of inflammatory and systemic rheumatic diseases, osteoarthritis and osteoporosis with tendomyotic character, generalized crystal-associated synovitis, endocrinological disorders, infections diseases, and drug-related side effects to enumerate the most frequent possibilities. We particularly examine chronic fatigue syndrome as a phenomenon similar to fibromyalgia, and we discuss the questionable role of Ebstein-Barr virus.
