Summary

Temporomandibular joint affections in rheumatic disease are described. They were seen in inflamed joint diseases, mostly in rheumatoid arthritis, and less so in juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, Reiter’s syndrome, ankylosing spondylitis, and collagen vascular disease.

In osteoarthrosis, the temporomandibular joint affection occurs frequently, but pain seems to occur most infrequently.

It is very important to know about the incidence of a painful temporomandibular joint area in the course of fibromyalgia syndrome (fibrositis syndrome). Pain in this area could be the first sign of this syndrome. An early diagnosis of this general myalgic syndrome is helpful to avoid unnecessary therapeutic proceedings, especially dental surgery.
