Abstract
“Every truth has its sect and every sect its truth” says an old Chinese proverb, and even those of us who are gathered here today from many countries, from almost all continents of the world, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the World Health Organization’s (WHO’s) Human Reproduction Programme, belong to a particular sect of scientists, who believe profoundly in a bright future for the United Nations, in general, and for WHO in particular. Perhaps we have more in common in terms of fundamental values than with people within our own societies — or even within our own families. Still, except for our strong commitment to our common ideals and to the Special Programme during the past quarter of a century, we are rather different from each other and represent a multitude of views and a variety of approaches to life.
Do I contradict myself? Very well then, I contradict myself; (I am large — I contain multitudes.) Walt Whitman, 1855.
