The occurrence of neurons as scattered cells or in isolated groups in the white matter of the central nervous system has been occasionally reported. Most investigators have considered these cells as aberrant or displaced neurons belonging to the adjaeent neural structures. RAMóN Y CAJAL (1911), however, considering their morphological uniqueness labeled them as the interstitial nerve cells.
