Abstract
It is essential to point out limitations as well as merits of the observations made in this study before evaluating the interstitial nerve cells. Histochemical technique of acetylcholinesterase was employed primarily for identification of the neurons. The diverse neuronal elements may show AChE activity in different degrees of intensity, but the neuroglial elements do not show it at all (KOELLE, 1964, 1963). This fact assures that the interstitial cells are neuronal elements, though they may lose the typical appearance of neurons during the postnatal development.
