Abstract

The first stages of the research work on gibberellins in England took place within the industrial company, Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd. (I. C. I.). In 1951 Dr. W. A. Sexton of I. C. I.’s Pharmaceuticals Division read abstracts of papers describing Japanese work on gibberellins, and suggested to Dr. W. G. Templeman at Jealott’s Hill Research Station, Bracknell, Berks., that the substances would merit investigation as plant growth regulators. Dr. Templeman took up the suggestion and approached Dr. P. W. Brian at the Akers Research Laboratories, Welwyn, Herts. with regard to the production of experimental material.
