Abstract
Einstein’s deflection of light may be considered as a particular case of the refraction field in the neighbourhood of a material body with all its consequences such as the formation of images and the modification of light intensity. The lunar eclipse theory was, therefore, for us the starting point of a general investigation of this problem [1]. It was also the first correct treatment of the photometrical side and the most general examination of gravitational imagery. The subsequent work by other authors was mainly partial or cursory and, therefore, our theory will serve as the frame-work of this chapter. Of course, we have no intention of overlooking these scientists, as shall compare their results with ours and give prominence in the discussion to their applications in stellar astronomy.
