Abstract
These Lecture Notes are being written only a few months after the author finished an extensive review on the use of particle diffraction as a surface crystallographic tool together with T. ENGEL [1]. It comprised detailed discussions of the particle-surface interaction potential, of the mathematical methods for calculating diffraction intensities under inclusion of resonant effects as well as of the experimental requirements and present possibilities for performing diffraction investigations. Finally, a broad survey is presented on all results obtained by the end of 1980 with clean ionic, homopolar and metallic surfaces and with adsorbate systems. Some of these topics are also discussed by other authors in the present Lecture Series. Therefore, it is certainly not appropriate to present here just another short review. It seems of much more value to treat the above-mentioned topics only briefly, but nevertheless to such an extent that an understanding without further reading is possible, and to elaborate some special points not dealt with previously in sufficient detail or for which, in the meantime, progress has been such that a comprehensive discussion becomes worthwhile. With this point of view, these Notes can be taken as both a self-contained introductory text and as a first supplement to [1], especially in connection with the contents of Chapters 2, 3 and 5.
