Abstract

The surgical therapy of squamous cell cancer of the esophagus is today still a procedure with many problems. Although surgical complications like suture leakage could be reduced using stapler anastomosis, mortality is still high in western countries, perhaps due to multimorbidity of the patients. On the other hand a curative resection is more the exception than the rule. Can we suggest a radical surgical procedure in such a situation? The following study was initiated to clear the indication for the possibility of a curative operation [8]. We correlate the preoperative results of the diagnostics with the intraoperative findings and the specimen. This analysis seems to be very important, while clinical and pathological staging correlate only to a lesser degree (Table 1).
