Abstract
Between January 1969 and December 1985, 280 patients with carcinoma of the esophagus were operated on in our department. The cumulative 5-year survival rate of the patients, excluding the cases of direct operative death, is 27%, but the prognosis in the cases with tumor invading into the neighboring organs and/or distant metastasis is not as good, and in some cases the palliative operation or exploratory thoracotomy is pointless. In order to avoid such an operation and determine the appropriate therapeutic approach, the pretherapy staging is very important.
