Reevaluation of Computed Tomography in Preoperative Staging of Esophageal and Cardial Cancers: A Prospective Study

  • Conference paper
Diseases of the Esophagus

Abstract

The natural history of esophageal and cardial tumors includes both early invasion of adjacent structures and early lymphatic dissemination. Therefore, accurate selection of patients who are reasonable candidates for surgery is needed. In several studies it has been reported that computed tomography is the most reliable test for the staging of esophagocardial cancers, and that it should be used routinely in the preoperative staging to evaluate resectability [1–5]. However, several recent reports have at least partially contradicted the diagnostic accuracy of CT [6–9].
