Abstract

Since carcinoma of the esophagus originates in the mucosa, diagnostic procedures that directly image the mucosa such as endoscopy and barium esophagograms are useful as screening procedures. These examinations are limited in their ability to detect submucosal or extraesophageal disease. CT is suited for evaluation of sagittal and vertical spread of the carcinoma because of its cross-sectional imaging ability.
