The Value of Ultrasonography for Preoperative Staging of Esophageal Carcinoma

  • Conference paper
Diseases of the Esophagus

Abstract

In selecting the treatment for esophageal cancer, such as surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or laser therapy, it is necessary to evaluate the stage of the tumor accurately. We have used conventional ultrasonography (US) and endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) for diagnosis and evaluation of esophageal cancer since 1983. The procedures allow us to detect liver metastasis or lymph node metastasis and to estimate the depth of tumor invasion into the esophageal wall. They provided excellent results. In this paper, the ability and value of US and EUS in the clinical diagnosis and treatment of esophageal cancer are discussed.
