Diseases of the Esophagus

Part of the book series: Handbuch der inneren Medizin ((INNEREN 5,volume 3))

Abstract

Tuberculosis of the esophagus is a rare disease. In autopsy series of patients dying from tuberculosis, the incidence varies from 0.04 to 0.2% (Lockabd, 1913; Hlavacek, 1960). Calvet et al. (1961) observed one case among 36000 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. Wexels (1954), in a review of the literature, encountered reports on 125 cases and Chung- Seh-Tung (1962) collected 150 cases of esophageal tuberculosis from the literature.
