Abstract

Since the original pathological (Hamperl, 1934) and clinical (Winkelstein, 1935) descriptions of „peptic esophagitis“, a voluminous literature has appeared because of wide-spread interest by gastroenterologists, surgeons and radiologists. The designation of this condition as „peptic esophagitis“ was based on the belief that peptic digestion of the esophageal mucosa was the etiological agent. The term „reflux esophagitis“ is more suitable since identical pathological and clinical findings may result not only from reflux of gastric contents but also reflux of bile and pancreatic secretions, for example, after total gastrectomy. This chapter will attempt to indicate current concepts related to pathogenesis, diagnosis and therapy.
