Zusammenfassung

Im Jahre 1920 beobachteten Matill u. Conklin 1, daß ausschließlich mit Milch ernährte Ratten unfruchtbar blieben. Sie vermuteten, daß ein für die Fortpflanzung notwendiges Vitamin diesen Tieren fehlen müßte. Etwa 2 Jahre später entdeckten Evans u. Bishop 2, daß die bei einer bestimmten Diät eintretende Sterilität der Ratten durch den Mangel an einem fettlöslichen Wirkstoff verursacht wird, der verschieden von den bisher bekannten fettlöslichen Vitaminen A und D war. Die Existenz dieses fettlöslichen Faktors konnte Sure 3 1923 bestätigen, und er nannte ihn Vitamin E. Eine brauchbare biologische Methode für den Nachweis des Vitamins E arbeiteten Evans u. Burr 4 aus.
