From a practical point of view, counters constitute an important class of sequential networks. They are mostly used just for counting, but this does not preclude their use as basic constituent elements for the realisation of more complex functions. Such is the case in a certain number of special purpose digital systems as, for example, certain “binary-decimal” converters, adders, integrators, square root extractors, etc. in which relatively important functions are obtained by the use of counting techniques.
