Zusammenfassung
Das Relationenmodell zur Beschreibung von Datenbanken wurde 1970 von E. F. Codd vorgestellt [Cod 1]. Seitdem fand eine dynamische Entwicklung statt, die auf mehreren Voraussetzungen basiert:

Die Einfachheit des Relationenmodells wurde schnell erkannt.

Leistungsstarke Hardware ermöglichte ab Anfang der 80er Jahre die Implementierung des Relationenmodells.

Die Entwicklung und Standardisierung von relationalen, mengenorientierten Abfragesprachen sowie Programmierumgebungen der 4. Generation gewährleistet viele zukünftige Einsatzgebiete.

Hardwareunabhängige relationale DBS wie ORACLE und INGRES sowie der Markteintritt von IBM mit SQL/DS bzw. DB 2 forcieren die Verbreitung relationaler Datenbanksysteme.

Einige nicht-relationale, im Markt befindliche DBS wurden mit einer relationalen Benutzeroberfläche versehen.
