Bordetella pertussis and Beta Adrenergic Blockade
Leucocytosis with a predominating lymphocytosis (Morse, 1965; Morse and Bray, 1969).
Increased sensitivity to the lethal properties of histamine, serotonin, acetylcholine, and bradykinin as well as increased sensitivity to nonspecific stimuli such as endotoxin and cold stress (reviewed by Munoz and Bergman, 1968).
Enhanced antibody formation (Dresser et al., 1970) including a greater production of homocytotropic antibody in response to a given antigen (Mota and Peixoto, 1966).
Heightened susceptibility to both active (Malkiel and Hargis, 1952) and passive systemic anaphylaxis (Munoz and Anacker, 1959).
Hypoglycemia (Stronk and Pittman, 1955) and a decreased hyperglycemic response to epinephrine (Fishel and Szentivanyi, 1963), effects that are presumed to be due to beta adrenergic blockade.
