Abstract
The ordinary elastic theory of shell deflections is based on considering stretching and bending of the shell. It assumes that only the stresses σ x , σ θ , τ xθ where x is the axial distance, θ the azimuthal angle along the cylindrical shell, are significant, while the remaining stress components σ z , τ xz , τ θz , where z is the distance along the normal to the middle surface of the shell, are negligible. This assumption will be adhered to in the following, both in the initial, elastic state, and as creep progresses.
