Ecological Interactions Between Land and the Littoral Zones of Lakes (Masurian Lakeland, Poland)

  • Chapter
Coupling of Land and Water Systems

Part of the book series: Ecological Studies ((ECOLSTUD,volume 10))

Abstract

The influence of water bodies on the surrounding land is usually examined only from the standpoint of climate or hydrologic changes, and man-made reservoirs have received more attention than natural lakes. The opposite influence, that of a drainage basin on a lake, is examined more frequently, particularly with regard to the organic and mineral content. But, as compared with autochthonous matter, there are not many data on the amount, form, and fate of allochthonous matter in water bodies. It is known that the role of this material varies in different types of water. In general, its significance increases as the ratio area of lake/shoreline decreases.
