Summary

The preparation and use of maps has a long and remarkable history. However, during the last 20 years computer technology has begun to introduce major changes not only into the preparation of maps but also their use.

Part I of this paper begins with a brief description of the various applications of maps in terms of their uses and users. Part II sketches the procedures and resources traditionally involved in preparing a map. Part III discusses automated cartography objectives? processes and technological resources. Part IV concludes with comments regarding trends in the supply of and demand for computer generated maps in relation to data availability? new technologies, and future uses of maps.
