The Role of Hormone Therapy in the Management of Metastatic Breast Cancer

  • Chapter
Breast Cancer

Abstract

Appreciation of the results of the investigation of Huggins and his co-workers on tumors of the prostate [1] led to an intensive search for effective hormonal therapy in many forms of human cancers, including those of the mammary gland. The control of neoplasia, either by removal of hormonal factors (sources) or by administration of hormones, represents a challenging area of research which has real clinical implications. Unfortunately endocrine control of metastatic breast cancer is often transient and is limited to only a small number of patients, while in the majority of cases the disease is affected only slightly or not at all.
