Abstract

“In fifty cases operated upon by what we call the complete method we have been able to trace only three local recurrences.” So said William S. Halsted [1] in April 1894 to the Clinical Society of Maryland. This paper opened an era of surgical tradition in the treatment of breast cancer which was to go unchallenged for half a century (Fig. 1).
