Abstract
This part of the Symposium was originally intended to deal with the decay process in resistant wood, as distinct from susceptible wood, but very little work has been done in this field. The present paper deals with the wider field of natural decay resistance. The topic has been comprehensively reviewed by Scheffer and Cowling (1966) and by Kumar (1971). Here only selected aspects are discussed, commencing with some difficulties in the experimental measurement of decay resistance.
