Abstract
To the micro-organisms colonising it, wood may be regarded as a series of conveniently orientated holes surrounded by food. The colonisation sequence, as Butcher1 has pointed out, is a purely ecological one. The wood, being non-living material, makes no pathological response to the invading organisms. It can only be changed by some action of the organism and this may take one or several of a number of activities.
