Personal Indications of Alumina Against Alumina bearing surfaces in Total Hip Replacement

Abstract

For a long time user, exclusive and happy, of cemented implants with a couple of friction metal-polyethylene I learnt as one other which were the advantages and the inconveniences of this option. The acetabular loosening in the progress of osteolysis engendered by the wear debris of polyethylene having clearly been identified as the main cause of failure. Numerous researches were led to develop new techniques of manufacture and sterilization of which we can reasonably think that they will allow to improve the resistance in wear of this material in the years to come. Nevertheless, the physico-chemical structure of the polyethylene forbids to hope that it will be possible to obtain a perfect material, opening from then on a logical debate on the experiment of new materials in this application.
