Abstract
Total hip and knee replacement prostheses generate wear and corrosion products at their bearing surfaces, at modular junctions, and at interfaces with cement or bone. It is now well recognized that large numbers of these particles result in the formation of foreign-body granulation tissue, osteolysis and, in some cases, aseptic loosening requiring revision of an arthroplasty. Much less understood are potential immunologic phenomena and the possible systemic effects of widespread dissemination of metallic and polymeric degradation products [1, 6, 7, 8, 17]. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the histopathological and analytical findings from selected revision and postmortem retrieval studies and to communicate some of the emerging findings from our laboratory concerning the biocompatibility of conventional and alternative bearings.
