Abstract

Pierre Boutin MD in France was the tirst to describe the very low wear-rates with all-ceramic (COC) total hip replacements (THR). By April 1970 his tirst alumina ball and cup concept had been developed and implanted in concert with Daniel Blanquaert ot Ceraver Inc [1]. Subsequent collaborations at the University ot Paris between Drs. Boutin, Witvoet and Sedel furthered the development and analyses ot their all-alumina THR. Beginning in 1977, they incorporated the taperlock ball design and the hemispherical alumina cups of the cemented and press-fit THR types (Fig. 1).
