Abstract

This chapter will be concerned with the principles of the assay of bacterial toxins rather than the details which, for the better known toxins and antitoxins, may be found in various publications of the World Health Organization, viz. the International Pharmacopoeia, the Bulletin, the Technical Report Series and the Monograph Series. Nor will it be concerned in detail with the statistical mathematics of bioassays (see also vol. II), which has been the subject of much study in the last twenty years by a number of competent authorities, most of whom are cited in thoughtful reviews by Maaløe and Jerne 8 and by Miles 9. An attempt will be made to present the essential statistical conclusions in a non-mathematical way.
