Zusammenfassung

In dem vorliegenden Handbuchbeitrag haben wir versucht, den heutigen Stand der Methoden zur Isolierung und Reindarstellung der Proteine zu umreißen. Dieses Vorhaben kann uns beim besten Willen nur sehr unvollkommen gelungen sein. Einmal ist das Gebiet der Proteinforschung derart vielseitig und schwer zu übersehen und wird von so verschiedenartigen Forschungsrichtungen wie Medizin, Chemie, Physik und vielen ihrer Teilgebiete bearbeitet, daß es unmöglich ist, die in die Tausende gehenden Arbeiten wirklich gerecht und sachlich einwandfrei in einem derartigen Handbuchbeitrag zu kondensieren. Aber vielleicht schwerwiegender ist die Tatsache, daß es kaum einen ungünstigeren Zeitpunkt gibt, einen Handbuchbeitrag über irgendein Teilgebiet der Eiweißforschung zu schreiben. Befindet sich doch die Eiweißforschung z. Z. in einem kritischen Übergangsstadium, in welchem das vielseitige, empirische Material zu verarbeiten ist, das in über 200 Jahren Proteinforschung, gerechnet von der ersten Isolierung eines Proteins, dem Glutin aus Weizenmehl durch Beccar im Jahre 1747, zusammengetragen wurde. Durch die Anwendung der neu entwickelten analytischen Methoden, wie Elektrophorese, Chromatographie, Gegenstromverteilung and a., ist zudem klar geworden, daß — mit ganz wenigen Ausnahmen — wirklich reine und einheitliche Proteine noch gar nicht isoliert wurden.
