In view of the importance of cardiovascular ailments, the Mexican Institute of Social Insurance arranged in 1961 a statistical survey aimed at:
  1. 1)

    ascertaining the extent of hypertension and myocardial ischaemia in an urban area such as Mexico City.

  2. 2)

    Determining the average blood pressure of the population under survey.

  3. 3)

    Contributing to a better knowledge of the epidemiology of these two anomalies by analysing the factors which affect their distribution and frequency.
