Abstract
Biochemical genetics makes use of heritable metabolic dissimilarities among individuals of a species in studies of fundamental biochemical problems. Through the application of its methods considerable progress has already been made in working out the metabolic pathways by which many amino acids, vitamins, and the constituents of nucleic acids are synthesized by living cells. Another result of the same studies has been an increased understanding of the interdependencies which exist between different biochemical processes within living cells. Furthermore, the methods of biochemical genetics offer the only means now known by which it is hoped to learn how genes enter into the control of cellular processes, one of the fundamental problems of biochemistry.
