Abstract

The demonstration that renin and angiotensin are capable of stimulating the production of aldosterone (GENEST et al., 1960; LARAGH et al., 1960; MULROW & GANONG, 1961; CARPENTER et al., 1961; BARTTER et al., 1961; BLAIR-WEST et al., 1962; BROWN et al., 1965a; FRASER et al., 1965a) has provided further support for the suggestion (GROSS, 1958) that the renin-angiotensin system is involved in the control of sodium balance. In such a hypothetical mechanism (Pig. 1), sodium loss leads in some way to an increase in plasma renin concentration. This in turn raises the concentration of angiotensin in blood, stimulates the secretion of aldosterone, and thereby limits the extent of sodium loss.
