Zusammenfassung

Die Eintrübung der Hornhaut war zu Anfang des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts immer noch mit Erblindung gleichbedeutend. Es schien völlig hoffnungslos und unmöglich zu sein, diesen Zustand zu verändern und dem Kranken das Sehvermögen wiederzugeben. Die Idee der Überpflanzung irgendeines durchsichtigen Materials in die Hornhaut eines wegen Leukoms erblindeten Auges stammt von Pellier de Quengsy (1789). Er versuchte aber seine Idee gar nicht zu verwirklichen; deshalb geriet sie eine Zeitlang vollkommen in Vergessenheit.
