Abstract
During the intensive research of highly potent coronary dilators carried out by Dr. F. Bossert and Dr. W. Vater, nifedipine has been found to be one of the most active drugs in this category, not only for parenteral but also for oral administration. Nifedipine was introduced into Japan by Professor K. Hashimoto, Department of Pharmacology, Tohoku University, in 1968. Professor Hashimoto was very impressed by the extraordinary activity of this drug, as described in the Bayer company leaflet, and started his first experimental study with small doses of this compound. He immediately recommended a clinical application trial, and the clinical study started in the following year. Other experimental studies rapidly developed alongside this clinical one.
