Memoria minuitur nisi earn exerceas (Cic. Cato major 6) Alle Organe altern, aber sie altern nicht zur gleichen Zeit und nicht in gleicher Weise. Altersveränderungen bestimmter Organe lassen sich klinisch meist nur schwer oder überhaupt nicht nachweisen. Ein Organ macht hier jedoch sicher eine große Ausnahme: das Gehirn. Auch dem Laien fällt auf, wenn der Gesprächspartner offensichtlich dem Gespräch nicht folgen kann, sich an allgemein bekannte Tatsachen nicht erinnert, zeitlich und örtlich desorientiert ist. Allzuoft wird dann der Begriff der „Gehirnverkalkung“ geprägt.
