Zusammenfassung

Die Mehrzahl epidemiologischer Analysen über Verlauf und Komplikationen des Diabetes ist beeinträchtigt durch die fehlende Differenzierung in die nosologisch eigenständigen Typen I und II. Dieser Vorbehalt trifft auch auf so ergebnisreiche Untersuchungen wie die WHO Multinational Study of Vascular Disease in Diabetics [40] und viele der bekannten prospektiven Populationsstudien wie zum Beispiel von Framingham [10, 18] zu. Da epidemiologische Aussagen in besonderer Weise an die Dimension Zeit gebunden sind und die WHO-Klassifikation des Diabetes erst 1980 eingeführt wurde, ist dieses methodische Problem nicht kurzfristig zu lösen. Typendifferenzierte epidemiologische Analysen über Arteriosklerose und Diabetes können zur Zeit daher meist nur durch die nachträgliche Klassifizierung untersuchter Zielpopulationen vorgenommen werden, soweit die Studiendaten dies überhaupt zulassen.
