Zusammenfassung

Mit 2 bis möglicherweise 5% ist die Zuckerkrankheit eine der häufigsten Erbkrankheiten. Eine solche Häufigkeit bei einem genetisch mitbedingten Leiden ist so ungewöhnlich, daß man Selektionsvorteile für die Krankheitsträger annehmen muß. Verschiedene Hypothesen wurden zur Erklärung der Häufigkeit und zum Nachweis des Selektionsvorteils aufgestellt, ohne daß sie bisher bewiesen werden konnten [48]. Heute freilich scheint ein solcher Selektionsvorteil für Diabetiker nicht mehr zu bestehen. Die Überernährung in unserem Zeitalter stellt vielmehr einen wesentlichen exogenen Manifestationsfaktor für die Krankheit Diabetes mellitus dar.
