Zusammenfassung
Die Häufigkeit atherosklerotischer Wanderkrankungen extrakranieller Hirnarterien als Ursache von Schlaganfällen im mittleren und höheren Lebensalter ist erst eine Erkenntnis der letzten 2 bis 3 Jahrzehnte. In diese Zeit fallen eine Reihe systematischer postmortaler Untersuchungen, der verstärkte Einsatz der cerebralen Angiographie in der Diagnostik und Fortschritte der rekonstruktiven Gefäßchirurgie, mit denen neue Wege der Bekämpfung des Hirninfarktes möglich geworden sind.
