Regressive and Progressive Changes of Intimal Smooth Muscle Cells in Atherosclerosis

Abstract

The intima of normal elastic and larger muscular arteries of man grows in width in the postnatal life and becomes populated by increasing numbers of smooth muscle cells [1, 2]. This growing intima has been referred to as diffuse intimal thickening and is not considered to be part of the atherosclerotic process [3, 4]. Similar intimal growth in width was observed in animals, particularly in species of large size [5, 6].
