Abstract
These are diseases of cardiac muscle, the causes of which are largely unknown. In only a few patients can the myocardial lesion be traced back to a known underlying disease. Variations in nomenclature reflect the rapid increase of knowledge in this disease category. For the hypertrophic form of myocardial disease alone there are literally dozens of different terms that have been used.
