Zusammenfassung

Die Warmblütigkeit, also die Fähigkeit, eine innerhalb enger Grenzen von wenigen ° C gleichbleibende Körpertemperatur aufrecht zu erhalten, ist eine entwicklungsgeschichtlich „junge“ Errungenschaft in der Evolution der Wirbeltiere. Wie alle anderen Warmblüter profitiert auch der Mensch von der damit gegebenen Konstanz des inneren Milieus; sie erst macht die Leistungsfähigkeit des Organismus auf hohem Niveau unabhängig von den äußeren Temperaturbedingungen. Allerdings wird dieser Vorteil durch einen höheren Energiebedarf erkauft; bei gleicher Körpertemperatur ist der Ruhestoffwechsel eines Warmblüters etwa viermal intensiver als der eines gleichgroßen Kaltblüters.
