Effect of Convection in the Electrification of Clouds

Abstract

The role of eddy diffusion, along with the electrical conductivity, inside a cloud, which is building an electrical field through gravitational separation of drops, is considered. An expression for “effective conductivity” for the conduction of charges under electrical and eddy-diffusion currents has been obtained. With this expression, and using the Latham and Mason equation for time build-up of field inside a cloud under the differential charge transport mechanism of Colgate, an expression for the time build-up of field inside cloud has been obtained. The eddy convection as well as the vertical extent of cloud, both, in their turn, have the effect of enhancing the build-up rate.
