Zusammenfassung

An adequate daily supply of energy and nutrients is necessary to maintain an individual in a normal physiological State of health and to offer the best resistance to illness and trauma, such as infections, burns, surgery, etc. If normal oral or enteral nutrition is difficult or impossible to maintain, essential nutrients may be provided either by the intravenous route or tube-feeding. Intravenous feeding is resorted to only when tube-feeding or oral feeding is impossible.
