Zusammenfassung
Wie bereits erwähnt, liegen Diffusionskoeffizienten von Gasen unter Normalbedingungen in der Gröβenordnung 1 bis l0-1 cm2sec-1 und sind in erster Näherung proportional P-1. Die mittlere Verschiebung eines Gasmoleküls in einer Sekunde ist also von der Gröβenordnung von lern. Die naheliegende experimentelle Anordnung zur Messung der Gasdiffusion besteht daher in einem ziemlich langen Rohr von nicht zu groβem Durchmesser, das mittels eines Hahns mit Bohrung gleich dem Rohrdurchmesser oder eines Schiebers in zwei Teile unterteilt ist, vgl. Kap. I. Das Rohr muβ vertikal stehen, mit der schweren Komponente im unteren Ende. Nachdem beide Rohrenden entweder mit zwei verschiedenen Gasen oder mit Gasmischungen verschiedener Konzentration gefüllt sind, beginnt man einen Versuch durch öffnen des Hahns. Da Konvektion beträchtliche Fehler verursachen kann, muβ die Temperatur über die gesamte Rohrlänge konstant gehalten werden. In manchen Versuchen erschien es zweckmäβig, einen sehr geringen Temperaturanstieg nach oben aufrechtzuerhalten, von der Gröβenordnung einiger Zehntel Grade über eine Rohrlänge von etwa 1 m zur Vermeidung von Konvektion.
