Zusammenfassung

Schon Homer beschreibt in seinen Dichtungen ein wundersames Pharmakon Namens Nepenthes, bei dem es sich nach übereinstimmender Meinung der Historiker um Opium handelte (G. Baisette):

In das Gefäß, aus dem sie ihren Wein zu schöpfen pflegten, schüttete Helena einen wundersamen Saft. Er vertreibt allen Schmerz und alle Wut und macht alle Übel vergessen. Wer einmal aus einer Schale mit dieser Mischung getrunken hat, vergießt keine Tränen und lacht den ganzen Tag über, selbst wenn sein Vater oder seine Mutter gestorben wäre, ja selbst wenn seinem Bruder oder Lieblingssohn in seiner Gegenwart und unter seinen Augen mit der erzenen Waffe die Kehle durchschnitten würde.
