Summary

A total of 223 patients who underwent reduction mammaplasty according to Hoehler from 1986 to 1993 were asked 1–7 years postoperatively about life quality. Preoperative complaints were shoulder girdle (77%) and back pain (67%). Only 51% had mastodynia as a primary complaint; 81.1% felt psychological discomfort due to breast size and shape; 95% of the patients noted a remarkable improvement in the quality of their business and social lifes; 94% were able to more specifically define this improvement and attributed it to an increase in feelings of self-estime and 53% even more specifically to more self-confidence; 95% felt the breast reduction had a positive influence on their sex lifes and personal relationships. Our study reveals that breast reduction surgery offers the patient not only cosmetic improvement and the clearly acclaimed relief of preoperative pain and discomfort, but the perhaps less easily quantified, but equally important improvement in the patient’s quality of life.

Zusammenfassung

223 Patientinnen, die sich von 1986–1993 einer Mammareduktionsplastik nach Hoehler unterzogen hatten, wurden mittels Fragebogen über die Lebensqualität 1–7 Jahre nach der Operation befragt. Präoperative Beschwerden waren vor allem Schultergürtel- (77%) und Wirbelsäulenschmerzen (67%). Nur 51% hatte Schmerzen in der Brust. 81,1% der Befragten gaben maßgebliche seelische Beeinträchtigungen wegen der Größe und Form der Brust präoperativ an. 95% gaben insgesamt eine positive Auswirkung der Reduktionsplastik auf ihr soziales und berufliches Leben an. 94% verzeichneten ein allgemein positiveres Selbstwertgefühl und 53% eine deutliche Zunahme ihres Selbstvertrauens. 95% gaben einen positiven Einfluß auf ihr Sexualleben und ihre Partnerschaft an. Durch die Mammareduktionsplastik kann sowohl durch das tatsächliche Ergebnis der plastischen Korrektur, als auch durch die Beschwerdebesserung eine Beeinflussung der Lebensqualität erreicht werden.
