Part of the book series: Current Topics in Microbiology and Immunology ((CT MICROBIOLOGY,volume 210))

Abstract

Following the initial report that the intraperitoneal injection of silicone gels leads to plasmacytoma formation in genetically susceptible strains of mice [1], clinical case-reports have appeared of multiple myeloma and monoclonal gammopathy of 0undetermined significance (MGUS) in people with silicone-implants. To characterize the cases identified to date, the National Cancer Institute has established a Silicone Implant/Multiple Myeloma Registry. The Registry also includes patients with MGUS and is not restricted to females, but only female patients with multiple myeloma are included in this report. Several individual series of cases have been reported earlier [2] (and see also other chapters in this volume), and some of these cases are also included herein.

Dr. Rabkin attests that he has no financial related to silence implants nor any participation in silicone-related litigation.
