This paper presents the concept of mobile radio communication and its applicability for the railway services. The requirements for safety relevant services are presented together with the requirements for telecommunication services for the passengers and other railways administrative services. The technical aspects of the mobile radio communication are presented and the importance of the standardization of the mobile radio communication for the European railway transport is discussed.
